Scoreless First Dooms FAMU Women At SCSU, 61-48

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Feb. 18) – The FAMU Women’s Basketball teamendured a scoreless first quarter Monday against South Carolina State, and went on to suffer a 61-48 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference setback in the Smith-Hammond Memorial Center.

FAMU (4-21, 2-11 MEAC) was outscored 17-0 in the opening stanza, and finished with 10 first half points, while South Carolina State (13-13, 6-6 MEAC) rolled to a 30-10 halftime edge.

Monday’s game was not a memorable one for shooting performances, as FAMU finished at 27 percent from the floor to 34 percent for South Carolina State. The two clubs combined to shoot 1 for 17 from distance.

FAMU did make a late run at the Bulldogs, outscoring SCSU, 38-31 in the second half, but the 17-point first quarter hole proved too much to dig out of for FAMU Monday.

Freshman Mya Moye led FAMU with 12 points, splashing the game’s only three-pointer, while junior Dy’Manee Royal finished with a double double, pulling down 12 rebounds to go with her 10 points. Freshman Morgan Mitchell added nine points, grad student Candice Williams had eight points and five rebounds, while grad Tyra James pulled down seven rebounds.

WHAT’S NEXT: FAMU will return to the Lawson Center to close its’ 2019 home schedule against rival Bethune-Cookman Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
