SAVANNAH, Ga. (Jan. 19) - Preston Blackman nails a fade-a-way jumper 17.1 second left in the game to give Savannah State, a 59-57 win over the Florida A&M Men’s Basketball team here Saturday night at Tiger Arena.
Trey Kellum tied the game at 55-55 for FAMU on a layup with 43.4 second left in the game, halting a 14-8 run by the Tigers.
FAMU (4-10, 1-3 MEAC) was led by Jamie Adams as she scored a game high 18 points to lead all scorers, followed by a Reggie Lewis with 13. Jomari Bradshaw led the Rattlers in assists with six, while Muhammad Abdul-Aleem led FAMU on the boards with six.
SSU (9-9, 3-1 MEAC) was paced by Blackmon as he scored a team high 14 points, followed by Arnold Louis with 11 and Rashad Hassan with 10. Hassan led the Tigers on the boards with seven, while Blackmon dished out a team high four assists.
In the first, Adams tied the game at 6-6 on field goal with 16:26 left to in the half.
Then FAMU used a 9-1 run to take a 15-7 lead on an Adams three pointer with 12:30 to go in the first.
SSU battled their way back into the contest with a 9-0 run as they took a 16-15 lead on a Blackmon layup with 9:37 to go in the half.
The Rattlers regain the lead as they took a 27-20 lead with 5:10 to go in the first on a Lewis layup with 5:10 to in the half.
The Tigers would tie the game at 29-29 as they closed the first half with a 9-2, capped off by a Hassan layup with 53 second left in the game first half.
FAMU finished the first half shooting 44.0 percent (11-of-25), while SSU shot 41.9 percent (13-of-31).
In the second half, the Rattlers jumped out to a 40-36 lead on a pair of Adams free throws with 13:55 to go in the game.
The Rattlers would finish the game shooting, 44.4 percent (20-of-45), while the Tigers shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55). SSU held the rebounding advantage over FAMU 39-25.
FAMU will return to action on Monday, January 21 as they will travel to Orangeburg, S.C., to take on South Carolina State in a 7:30 p.m. Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Gymnasium.
