Rules for holiday leftovers

Posted

Holiday gatherings are plentiful this time of year, as are the leftovers.

But some things are better off being tossed once the guests head home.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services bacteria can grow on some foods within two hours unless refrigerated.

This type of bacteria, which can’t be smelled or tasted, can make you sick. it can cause indigestion or in more severe cases vomiting and diarrhea.

Some self-serve foods like chips or mixed nuts can harbor bacteria if people reach in with their hands, so these are best to toss.

And regardless of how long a dip has been out, you should be wary of saving it.

Once you deem a food is safe to save, it will keep in the refrigerator but only for a few days.
