TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) - Leon County is getting some serious upgrades to their athletic facilities this year. Gene Cox Stadium is the highlight with a brand new turf field that will host football, lacrosse, soccer, and flag football for Leon County schools and hopefully, some State Championship games in the future.
At Rickards High School, there are more extensive renovations going down.
The school will be completely renovated over time, but one of the first big changes? Moving the baseball and softball fields back on campus and rebuilding the tennis courts.
"Rickards wants a little more hometown feel, a little more unity there," said Ricky Bell, the director of student activities for Leon County Schools. Bell is also a Rickards alum. "Moving them back on campus is a positive move."
It's a project long overdue, and one everyone is excited to see.
"It's just good to be back on campus. There's so many more things you can do," said Rickards head baseball coach Brian Kelley. "You don't lose time. You can have a longer study hall, you can have a longer weight room sessions, it's good to see LCS putting into Rickards High School."
The athletic upgrades to the high school are set to be finished by the start of the spring season.
