ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is asking the Tampa Bay Rays to remove its rays "touch tank" from Tropicana Field.
The Tampa Tribune reported Thursday on the letter to team counsel John Higgins from Delcianna Winders, director of PETA's captive animal law enforcement. PETA claims the tank, located behind the right-center field wall, places the fish in danger of being injured or killed by an errant ball.
PETA's request comes a week after Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera hit a home run that splashed into the tank. It has happened one other time, in 2007 by Luis Gonzalez of the Los Angeles Dodgers. No fish were struck in either incident.
The team had no comment on the letter.
