TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced the Southeast Regional Awards this week with the Seminoles sweeping coaching honors. Dwayne Hultquist, in his 14th season as the head coach at Florida State, was named the Southeast Coach of the Year while Nick Crowell was named Southeast Assistant Coach of the Year.
“I am honored to win this award in a region that is one of the best every year with three coaches who have been national coach of the year recently,” said Hultquist. “I am thrilled Nick won regional assistant coach of the year. He did a great job with recruiting a top five class this fall. He is excellent on court and respected around the country as one of the top assistants.”
“I am extremely honored to win this award this year,” said Crowell. “There are a lot of great teams and coaches in our region and I feel fortunate to win it this season.”
Hultquist and Crowell, who has been at Florida State for ten years, both lead the Seminoles to an 18-11 record highlighted by upsetting then No. 7 Oklahoma and No. 15 Texas. This year the team held a 13-4 record at home and won 10 matches against ranked opponents and went on to be ranked as high as No. 16 in the nation.
The coaches had four players make at least 20 singles wins this season, the most since 2008. Sophomore Dominic Cotrone has been ranked in singles all season reaching as high as No. 89. Cotrone and junior Blake Davis will participate in the NCAA Doubles Championships later this month.
