LAS CRUCES, N.M. (WTXL) - Florida State softball earned a win against a top-10 program for the first time since 2010 Sunday with a 5-1 victory over No. 9 Nebraska at the Hotel Encanto Invitational.
The No. 12 Noles (4-1) last win against a top-10 team came against then No. 6 Georgia Tech four years ago.
"I am so proud of our team for the way they executed the game plan," said head coach Lonni Alameda. "Lacey (Waldrop) had a tremendous game in the circle for us. Alex Kossoff and Tiffani Brown were huge along with Briana Hamilton who hit a big double for our program.
"What a great weekend and I am so excited for the journey ahead with the mindset this team has."
Starting in the circle for FSU was Lacey Waldrop, who avenged a loss to Nebraska two days ago by allowing just two Nebraska base runners to reach third base the entire game. Waldrop (2-1) finished with three strikeouts and one unearned run.
The biggest hit of the game came off the bat of senior Tiffani Brown, as the former Godby Cougar hit a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning.
Florida State returns home to Tallahassee for the Renegade Classic February 14-16, as the Noles host Southern Miss, Hofstra, and North Dakota State. FSU will play their home opener against NDSU Friday, February 14, with a first-pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
