TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A trio of Florida Gulf Coast pitchers combined for a seven-hit shutout on Wednesday afternoon as the Eagles (17-16-1) blanked No. 8 Florida State (26-9) 5-0 in game two of the mid-week series on Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium.

After Florida State posted a 5-0 shutout to open the series on Tuesday night thanks to a career-high eight shutout innings turned in by Bryant Holtmann, FGCU’s Nick Deckert (1-0) returned the favor by blanking the Seminoles over 5.1 innings on Wednesday. The Tallahassee, Fla., native allowed just three hits and three walks while striking out four to earn his first win of the season.

“It was just one of those games that you literally give the credit to the other club,” Florida State head coach Mike Martin said. “They deserved to win; they played errorless baseball for two games. Ironically two 5-0 ball games; unfortunately we weren’t in on but one of them.”

Deckert gave up a base hit back up the middle to Josh Delph to start the bottom of the first but then settled into a groove before issuing back-to-back one-out singles by John Sansone and Quincy Nieporte in the sixth. The senior southpaw gave way to former Seminole Jordan Desguin who got the Eagles out of the jam by recording a strikeout and a fielder’s choice groundout to retire the side.

“He was just moving the pitches around; he was hitting his spots and had control of the game the whole time,” said Delph on Deckert’s performance.

Florida State returns to ACC play this weekend as the Seminoles make their first-ever trip to South Bend, Ind., to face Notre Dame.
