TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Xavier Rathan-Mayes came to Florida State as the 44th-best recruit in the country according to the ESPN rankings, but the Noles are going to have to wait a little longer than expected to find out just how good he actually is.
The NCAA ruled today Rathan-Mayes is academically ineligible, so he will be forced to sit out the entire 2013-2014 season.
FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton issued a statement to the media, saying, "Following a review by the NCAA Eligibility Center, it was determined that some of the coursework Xavier completed during his high school enrollment could not be used to satisfy NCAA Division I initial-eligibility requirements.
"The NCAA has allowed Xavier to enroll immediately at Florida State and receive athletics scholarship, however, he will not be permitted to practice or compete during his first year of enrollment."
A 6'4" 180 pound guard, Rathan-Mayes averaged 13.7 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per game last year at Huntington Prep. While there, he played with last year's number one overall recruit, Andrew Wiggins, a recruit Florida State targeted heavily until he decided to sign with Kansas.
