TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State football team held its second scrimmage of the spring season on Saturday on Bobby Bowden Field inside Doak Campbell Stadium.
Despite calls for severe weather, the Noles were able to complete the entire scrimmage outside after moving inside to the Albert J. Dunlap Athletic Training Facility last weekend.
Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher said a lot of plays were made during the practice sessions, but he added that the Seminoles need more toughness and consistency with the annual spring Garnet and Gold game a week away.
“Guys made some plays, but again not enough consistency,” Fisher said. “Not enough toughness on both sides of the ball. Both sides made plays, but not enough, we’re not mentally and physically tough. That’s not coach talk, that’s just the place where we’re at right now and we’ve got to grind through it. We’ve got to be held accountable for our mistakes and get better. There’s a lot of good, there’s a lot of plays being made. A lot of talent out there, but we’re not playing with enough consistency.”
Fisher said he was impressed at times by rising sophomore running back Jacques Patrick and rising redshirt sophomore tight end Ryan Izzo on offense, while rising senior defense end DeMarcus Walker and rising sophomore safety Derwin James showed flashes on defense.
“(Patrick) took some runs where I wanted to see him do, three and four-yard runs and made them six and seven-yard runs,” Fisher said of the Orlando, Fla., running back. “He started running with the power and the size that he has and pushing the pile. Not enough yet, but a lot more consistent than what he did.”
Patrick was Florida State’s second-leading rusher as a true freshman in 2015, toting the ball 63 times for 314 yards (5.0 ypc) and five touchdowns. The 6-2, 233-pound ball carrier is slated to be the primary backup to All-American Dalvin Cook and could share the backfield with the Noles’ star. Patrick had a monster all-around game in his only start in 2015, rushing for 162 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries while adding six receptions for 62 yards against Syracuse.
