TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State football team held its first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday at the Albert J. Dunlap Athletic Training Facility.
Inclement weather forced the Seminoles inside the indoor practice facility for the entire practice, but FSU still donned full pads and went head-to-head for nearly two-and-a-half hours, working 1’s vs. 1’s, 2’s vs. 2’s and 3’s vs. 3’s, as well as situational drives.
“We got a lot of young guys in a lot of situations,” head coach Jimbo Fisher said. “We’ll look at the film before I evaluate, but overall solid. Ups and downs. We took some of the main guys out at times. It was good, but those young guys have to be more consistent but it’s where I thought we’d be at this stage. There were some really good things though, too. I know we have a lot of work to do, but not unhappy.
All-American running back Dalvin Cook only took a few reps during the practice, leaving the bulk of the carries to rising sophomore Jacques Patrick and rising redshirt junior Ryan Green. Fisher also said he limited defensive leaders Derwin James and DeMarcus Walker on Saturday.
“[Sophomore] Jacques [Patrick] and [senior] Ryan Green and [senior fullback] Freddie Stevenson,” Fisher said on who had increased reps at running back. “Ryan had a long run, Jacques ran the ball really good and got more physical. We have to continue to have him keep getting his pad level down because he can be a force when he runs. They got a lot of carries.”
James, a rising sophomore safety, had an interception early in the scrimmage.
Rising junior Travis Rudolph was singled out by Fisher as having a solid scrimmage among the wide receiver group. He wore a blue non-contact jersey as a precaution, but the West Palm Beach, Fla., native remains healthy.
Fisher was complimentary of all three scholarship quarterbacks – rising redshirt sophomore J.J. Cosentino, rising redshirt freshman Deondre Francois and true freshman early enrollee Malik Henry. All three took several reps, and Fisher said he would watch film to evaluate if any signal-caller stood out with returning quarterback Sean Maguire sidelined this spring.
