TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Rising junior Kerrie Cartwright lead the Bahamas to win Pool B of the Americas Group II Fed Cup in Santa Tecla, El Salvador. The Bahamas went 5-0 in the round-robin formatted tournament, which was played on the clay courts at the Maya Country Club.
In addition to Cartwright, former Seminoles Francesca Segarelli (DOM) and Carolina De los Santos (URU) played in the event for their respective nations.
Between singles and doubles play, Cartwright posted a record of 8-1 during the week, with a perfect 5-0 showing in singles. With the Pool B win, the Bahamas will be promoted to the Americas Group I division for 2014 which includes, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Mexico and Paraguay.
In her first singles match, Cartwright defeated Anneliese Rose, 7-5, 6-0 from court two in the 2-1 win over Trinidad and Tobago after falling 6-1, 6-4 in doubles while paired with Simone Pratt.
Cartwright was moved up to court one for her second match, facing De Los Santos of Uruguay. In a tight three sets, Cartwright outlasted De Los Santos 6-1, 4-6, 5-7 leading her country to a 3-0 triumph over Uruguay.
Remaining at the No.1 spot for the match against El Salvador, Cartwright defeated Juli Raventos 6-1, 6-3 on top a picking up her second doubles victory, 6-0, 6-0. The Bahamas won, 3-0.
In her last match, Cartwright once again took to the top court, defeating Michelle Marie Valdez of the Dominican Republic, 6-2, 7-5. However, on court two, Segarelli beat Pratt 6-0, 7-5, forcing the match to be decided with doubles.
Cartwright was paired with Larikah Russell, while Segarelli was matched with Joelle Schad. After winning the first set, Cartwright and Russell surrendered their lead in the second before storming back to take the third and the match. The Bahamas defeated the Dominican Republic 2-1 after Cartwright and Russell won 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
Segarelli helped her country to a second place finish in Pool B, behind a combined 8-1 record. In her first match, Segarelli defeated Mariella Calderon of Costa Rica, 6-1, 6-3 from court one and added a doubles win with Schad over Raventos and Laua Viquez, 6-2, 6-2. The Dominican Republic took the match over Costa Rica, 3-0.
Playing on court two in 2-1 win against El Salvador, Segarelli defeated Jennifer Paola Artigua Henriquez in a tight three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in order to tie the match 1-1. Segarelli teamed up with Valdez in order to secure the win with a doubles victory, 6-4, 6-3.
In her third match, Segarelli defeated Magalena Boado of Uruguay, 7-6 (8), 6-0 on court two. Once again, Segarelli helped her team to victory with a decisive doubles victory while paired with Schad, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 over De Los Santos and Boado. The Dominican Republic won by a score of 2-1.
The Dominican Republic fell in its final match against the Bahamas, 2-1. Segarelli scored the only point for the team by defeating Pratt on court two.
De los Santos contributed to a third place finish for Uruguay in Pool B. De los Santos went a combined 5-4, winning four of her five singles matches. Her only singles loss was to Cartwright in a tight 6-1, 4-6, 5-7 decision.
Uruguay first defeated El Salvador, 2-1. De Los Santos first defeated Rosalinda Calderon on court two, 6-1, 6-2 before picking up a huge doubles win while teamed up with Boado, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Moving on to play the Bahamas, Uruguay lost 3-0, however they regrouped to defeat Trinidad and Tobago, 2-1. De los Santos added a singles win in the 3-0 victory, defeating Breana Stampfli 6-1, 6-0.
Uruguay fell to the Dominican Republic 2-1, with De los Santos contributing the lone point for her team. She defeated Karla Portalantin from court one, 6-2, 6-1. De los Santos and Boado fell to Schad and Segarelli in doubles play, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
Closing out the tournament, Uruguay defeated Costa Rica 2-1 as De los Santos added a singles and victory by beating Calderon 6-1, 6-2.
All told, the Seminoles went 21-6 between singles and doubles for the week and claimed the top three spots in Pool B.
