TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Palmer Cup teams for both the United States and Europe were announced today. The annual Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 7-9 at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Del. Sophomore Daniel Berger was named to the team by the committee.
“It has been one of my long term goals since I started playing at a high level in amateur golf,” said Berger. “I’m grateful for everyone who has helped me get here. I am excited to represent my country and Florida State in such a historic event with such great tradition of great players.”
“Playing on the Palmer Cup will be a great experience for Daniel and one he will never forget,” said head coach Trey Jones. “Being selected is another example of how much he has improved in the past year. I expect Daniel to take this opportunity and use it to continue to develop.”
This season Berger has played exceptional golf. He has won two tournaments this spring and has posted four additional finishes in the top five. In December he won the 82nd Dixie Amateur by 13 strokes. He currently has the lowest stroke average in the ACC and was named ACC Co-Performer of the Month for January/February. The men’s golf team participates in the ACC Championships this weekend.
The Palmer Cup was formed in 1997 when the Golf Coaches Association of America approached Arnold Palmer to lend his name to the international collegiate event between the United States and Europe. Currently the United States leads the all-time series 8-7-1.
