TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The top-10 matchup lived up to its billing, as No. 2 Florida State stunned No. 9 Virginia Tech with an 87th-minute Dagny Brynjarsdottir goal, lifting the Noles to a 2-1 win.
"Heck of a battle," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "Two top-10 teams slugging it out in a good, hard, physical game. A lot of action and we are thrilled to come out with a victory. Certainly a hard-fought victory and well-earned as well."
Brynjarsdottir's game-winner came just five minutes after the Hokies evened up the score at 1-1, off a 19-yard Kallie Peurifoy free kick, a goal that ended FSU's scoreless streak at 589 minutes. The Seminoles' first tally came just 32 seconds before Virginia Tech's, as Marta Bakowska-Mathews bent a ball from the top of the box inside the right post.
"I thought that we had some good looks," added Krikorian. "My thought is if you can continue to get quality chances, eventually it is going to happen for you. And fortunately enough for us, it did."
The win boosts Florida State to 6-0-0 in the ACC, and the Noles are tied for first-place in the conference with North Carolina. FSU will next travel to Pittsburgh, beginning a three-game road trip Saturday, October 18 in a 12:00 p.m. kickoff against the Panthers.
