MADISON, Fl. (WTXL) - Last year, the Madison County boys weightlifting team won their first ever team title. Two guys also brought home individual gold.
It was a big achievement, but when you're a Cowboy, winning is expected. This calendar year alone has seen three Final Fours, two State Championships, and a slew of athletes sign with division one programs.
"You win championships with good people," said head weightlifting coach Mike Coe. "We've had plenty of years with good players, you win championships with good people who do things right and we've got that right now."
The boys weightlifting team is part of that success, and now they are looking to repeat one year later.
"We worked hard just to get here again," said Derion Staten. "We just have to go and make history again."
Four young men are making this year's trip, two seniors, Cameron Brown and Laertes Bell, who qualified first in their respective class.
"The two older guys, Larry and Cameron, I've been really proud of them," said Coe. "I haven't had to motivate them a whole bunch. One got 4th last year and one got 3rd and were disappointed in that, so they both are chasing that first place deal. They've been waiting for this moment, and I'm excited to see what they do."
"We just come in here and work, I mean it's not hard to win when you work harder than everyone else," added Bell. "I mean I don't mean that in an arrogant way but we got a great work ethic, so, just determined."
Determined and working hard, this group is ready to compete.
"The fruit of their labor is about to show," said Coe. "You've worked your tail off, you know you're ready for it, you've been in the moment a bunch of times so just go do what you do, don't panic, just go do what you do."
Chasing a goal and this bunch looks to add a little more hardware to their collection.
