MADISON, Fl. (WTXL) - Last week, the Madison County baseball team sealed up a trip to Fort Myers and the State Final Four with a walk-off win over defending State Champion Lafayette.
"We had been working up, preparing for this all summer long," said junior Drew Herring. "We knew when we were coming into the season what our goal was."
Senior pitcher Trey Mitchell agreed. "Just come out and practice, two times as hard, and we just did this year."
"Our guys were committed to the off season program, just working hard and getting back to this point," said head coach Terry Barrs. "We've been focused all year, and things are starting to come together for us."
The Cowboys are winners of eight straight games, and this team has it clicking at just the right time. Regardless of how this week goes, this year has been a fun one.
"To be honest, it hasn't hit me yet, that it's happened," laughed Dustin Bass, a junior catcher. "Later down the road, I'll realize how good of a team we were. It's not just because of one or two people, it's because of the whole team. We all contribute."
"This has been my favorite year to play ever of baseball," added Herring. "I've always been kind of tensed up and had a lot of pressure, but this group of guys is relaxed, having fun, so we all know what we are out here to play for."
Year after year, football is always expected to contend for a state title. For the 'Boys on the diamond, the trip to Fort Myers is a new venture, but one they hope is a regular one, and each and every player believes this team has what it takes to get the job done.
"Ever since we were little, we dreamed of being Cowboys, coming up and doing something no one has ever done," said Herring. "It's going to be an amazing feeling for all of us."
"This team, they just seem different," added Coach Barrs. "They're a group, they're a unit, and we've worked really hard to get to this point. They need to have fun now, focus and go finish it up.
Go finish, the only mission for the Cowboys moving forward. Madison County takes on South Walton on Wednesday in Fort Myers. First pitch is slated for 1:00.
