Sauls was a 1964 graduate of Leon High School, and joined famed coach Gene Cox as an assistant in 1974. Sauls replaced Cox upon his retirement, and was the school's Athletic Director and head football coach from 1991 to 2000.

Feely released a statement today that read:

“Jimmy Sauls was what every coach aspired to be. He was a champion in every way and will be missed by so many people whose lives he helped shape, including mine.”
