TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) - The Lincoln High School baseball team finished State Runner-up back in 2003. To date, that's the furthest the program has ever made it in the State Playoffs. The Trojans are back in the Elite Eight for the first time since 2007, and this year, they are looking to make it back to the State Finals.
To get to Fort Myers and play for a State title, they'll have to get by an 18-8 Wharton squad. The good thing? Lincoln gets the Wildcats at home. They haven't played in a week, which can be good, and not so good.
"Baseball you're so used to playing three times a week and you play Tuesday, and then you wait a week," said head coach Mike Gauger on Monday. "Now it's supposed to rain, so it's not the same. It's nice because you can get healthy, get the rest you need, but again, baseball you're used to playing multiple games a week which that's what baseball's really all about."
No matter when they play, the match-up isn't going to be easy. Gauger added this Wharton team is well-rounded and a solid ball club, and they'll have to play Trojan baseball to come out on top.
"We're going to have to continue what we have been doing, which is pitching good, picking it up well, playing that good defense," he said. "Every step you take, you see good hitters and good pitchers and runs are at a premium, so we'll have to really make sure we pitch and play defense well and hopefully score a couple of runs obviously."
Tuesday's Class 8A Regional Final is slated for 7:00.
