VALDOSTA, Ga. - Valdosta State cornerback Dominique Wheeler and punt returner Regginald Lewis were honored for their play in VSU's 37-3 win over Angelo State this past Saturday as they were named the Gulf South Conference Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, Monday.

Wheeler earned the GSC's Defensive honor after tallying a pair of turnovers in the contest. On Angelo State's first drive of the game, Wheeler stopped a Ram drive in Blazer territory when he stepped in front of a Kyle Washington pass and intercepted a pass. On the next drive, with ASU threatening in the red zone, Wheeler scooped up a Washington fumble and returned it 86 yards for a touchdown. The return was the second-longest fumble return in VSU history. Wheeler also had a tackle and broke up a second pass in the game.

Lewis was recognized as the week's top Special Teams player after a pair of long punt returns that set up Valdosta State scores. On his first return of the game, Lewis picked up 39 yards to move the ball to the ASU 25 yard line, from which the Blazers scored their first offensive touchdown of the game. His next return covered 29 yards and moved the ball to the ASU 38 to set up a VSU field goal.

The Blazers return to action this Saturday, October 5 at 3:00 p.m. when they welcome GSC foe Florida Tech to Bazemore-Hyder Stadium for VSU's Homecoming game.
