TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Leon High School's Gabe Beyer finished second in the State last year in the Class 2A 285 weight class, falling 7-6 by decision. This weekend, three Lions, including Beyer, are heading back to the wrestling State Finals, and this year's group is looking to take the program to the next level.

Leon boasts three Region Champions this season, a school record as the prep for this weekend's State meet, and the coaches are more then proud.

"Gabe Meyer is just a beast in all positions on the mat," said assistant coach Nick Wethy. "Jonathan Grant is a beast, and then Justin is very good technically."

"These kids have worked hard all year," agreed head coach Justin Grant. "Each week they step up they are aggressive they work hard. They are coachable and we are real proud of them at this point."

The Leon wrestlers had just two wrestlers back in 2003. This season, they boasted nineteen kids on the roster, partly because of wrestlers like the Grant brothers recruiting their friends.

"It shows that how far we have come," said Jonathan Grant. "People can keep coming in and working hard how they have been and we can possibly get like region titles as a team."

Along with the three State qualifiers from Leon, close to two dozen other wrestlers from six other Big Bend high schools will make the trek to Kissimmee for this weekend's meet. The State Finals kick off on Friday, and wrap up on Saturday.
