TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Football has been dominating the airwaves, but high school volleyball teams have been working just as hard to get ready for the 2016 season.
At Leon High School, the Lions are looking to build off last year's Final Four appearance, and end this season, with a win. There's no doubt that five set Final Four loss has fueled this team in the off season, and despite losing six seniors, head coach Angie Strickland said her team will be just fine.
"We have eight returning, and we've never had a group of eight returning from a Final Four or a State Championship team," she said.
Included in those eight is Makayla Washington, who led the Lions in kills and blocks last year as a freshman. Strickland said she encouraged her team to play against top talent this summer, and with a stacked schedule this season, and that experience, the Lions will be ready to go when it matters most.
"We have a lot of kids who know what it's like, that have tasted it, but just a little part of it," she said. "They really don't know what that final game looks like."
Leon kicks off the season on Friday, August 19th when they host their Annual Classic.
