TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Last week, three area girls soccer teams captured District titles, and on Thursday, those squads will play at home in the Regional Quarterfinals, while two more teams will hit the road.
District Champions have the luxury of playing at least the first round at home, so Florida High, Maclay, and Leon will take the pitch Thursday in familiar territory.
Leon defeated Lincoln in the District 2 Championship game to seal up the District crown, and the Lions are hungry for another deep postseason run.
They fell in the Regional Semifinals in double overtime last season to Navarre, who conveniently, is their opponent in Thursday's Quarterfinals. This Leon squad is young, they boast six freshman, but they all understand the importance of the match-up.
"We're really excited. The girls are really up for it, have been since last year," said head coach Tony Kidd. "This has been our goal for a year. They've seen some of the best. Navarre is apparently ranked in the top five or six in the state, and we've already played St. Thomas who's ranked number one, so we know what we're looking at."
Thursday's match-up kicks off Thursday at Leon at 7:o0. Maclay faces St. Joseph, while Florida High hosts Pensacola Catholic. Wakulla is on the road at North Bay Haven, while Lincoln travels to Niceville.
