MAYO, Fla. (WTXL) - There are fifth high school baseball teams in Class 1A in the state of Florida. After two weeks of play-offs, fifty has been whittled down to four, and starting on Wednesday, those teams will battle it out for a State Championship.
Lafayette head coach Tim Hanson said Monday at practice that his team is peaking at the right time, and after starting the season with several injuries, he's pleased with where they are.
He said if everything comes together this week, the Hornets will have a shot at winning their first State Championship, the key is just to relax and play their game.
"We don't want to change who we are," he said. "We want to enjoy the moment and get the most out of it and have fun. We are going to be there all together going through the whole process. Let's don't change the way we play because truthfully, we have nothing to lose."
The Hornets begin their run for a State Championship on Wednesday against Central out of Milton at 4:00 at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers.
Lafayette isn't the only Big Bend team represented at the State Tournament, as the Maclay Marauders are making their first appearance in the Final Four since 1993, when they won it all.
The Marauders kick off play in the Class 3A State Semifinals on Friday when they face Canterbury.
