TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Sept. 10) - The Florida A&M Volleyball team picked up their second win of the season as the Lady Rattlers defeated the University of North Florida, 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15, 15-11) in five sets, here Tuesday night at the Alfred Lawson, Jr. Multipurpose Center and Teaching Gymnasium.
FAMU (2-4) was paced by Katherine Huanec as she finished the contest with a team high 13 kills, followed by Yeisha Arcia with 12 and Ginna Lopez-Chavez with11. Diana Gonzales led the Lady Rattles in assists with 42; while Joanie Del Castillo recorded a team high 25 digs.
In the first set, UNF jumped out to a 10-5 lead capped off by a FAMU service error. The Lady Rattlers would then battle their way back into the match as FAMU tied the set at 14-14 on UNF attack error, capping a 9-4 run by the Lady Rattlers.
FAMU would reel off four more points to take an 18-16 on a double block by both Dei’Ja Martin and Gonzales.
UNF would then use a 6-3 run to tie the first set at 23-23 on Budinska kill. A Kelly Koop kill followed by a FAMU attack error would give UNF, the 25-23 win in the first set, giving the Ospreys a 1-0 lead.
The second set would be FAMU as the Lady Rattlers used a 9-5 run to tie the set at 19-19, capped off by a UNF attack error.
UNF would tie the set at 23-23 on a Budinska kill. FAMU would then win the set on a Huanec kill, followed by an UNF attack error, giving the Lady Rattlers a 25-23 win, tying the match at one apiece.
The Ospreys would take a 2-1 lead as defeated the Lady Rattlers, 25-20 in the third set.
FAMU would win the fourth set to tie the mat at 2-2 as they used a 10-5 run to win the set 25-15.
In the fifth and deciding set, FAMU jumped out to an 8-3 lead at the eight-point break, allowing both teams to change sides. The Lady Rattlers would then extend their lead to 11-4, capped off by a Soriano kill.
The Ospreys would then reel off six straight points as they cut the Lady Rattlers lead to 14-11, as UNF recorded three kills and three service aces in their 6-3 run.
Huanec would win the set and match for the Lady Rattlers as she recorded the final kill of the game to win the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
UNF (3-4) was paced by Anna Budinska with a team high 17 kills, followed by a Carina Hoff with 10. Abby Fesl led the Ospreys with 47 assists, while Cari Whitemire finished with a match high 12 digs.
FAMU will return to action on Friday, Sept. 14 as they Lady Rattlers will take on the University of North Dakota in the first match of the Tulane Tournament at 10 a.m. and then will take on tournament host, Tulane University in the 7 p.m. night cap, in New Orleans, La.
