SAVANNAH, Ga. (Jan. 19) - The Florida A&M Women’s Basketball team held off a Savannah State a late second half rally for a 59-49 win, here Saturday afternoon at Tiger Arena.
FAMU (6-11, 3-1 MEAC) had a pair of Lady Rattlers to score in double figures as both Jasmine Grice and Kimberly Sparkman combined for 45 points. Grice led the Lady Rattlers in scoring with 25 points, followed by Sparkman with 20. Grice led FAMU on the boards with nine, followed by Patrice Collie with eight.
SSU (6-12, 1-4 MEAC) was led by Erin Hogue as she finished with a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. In addition, SSU had three Lady Tigers to finish with seven points each.
The Lady Tigers opened the second half with an 11-5 run as they took a 35-33 lead with 10:48 to on an Andrietta Thomas put back.
FAMU regained the lead as they scored seven points with Grice scoring five of the seven points on the 7-0 run giving, the Lady Rattlers a 40-35 lead with 8:10 left in the game.
SSU cut the FAMU’s lead to 46-43 on a Norman put back with 4:09 to go in the game.
That would be the closes that the Lady Tigers would get as the FAMU defense turned four SSU turn over into scores.
FAMU would finish the game shooting 29.4 percent (20-of-60), while SSU shot 31.8 percent (7-of-22).
The first half would see three ties as Jerryshia Williams tied the game at 12-12 on a made free throw with 9:16 to in the half.
The Lady Rattler defensive pressure would cause three turnovers, that would result in a 9-0 run as FAMU took a 21-12 lead on a Sparkman three pointer with 6:50 left in the first.
FAMU would go into the break with a 28-21 lead as they finished the first half shooting 31.7 percent (20-of-63), while SSU shot 29.6 percent (16-of-54). The Lady Tigers held the rebounding edge over the Lady Rattlers as they outrebounded FAMU, 49-42.
The Lady Rattlers will return to action on Monday, January 21 as they will travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on South Carolina State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match up at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Gymnasium in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
