APALACHEE REGIONAL PARK — Earlier this morning at Apalachee Regional Park the 1A and 2A state cross country finals wrapped up a weekend full of competition in the Big Bend.

Locally, class 1A was dominated by Maclay who picked up a fifth place overall finish in the girls race. Susan Koeppel reached the podium with an 11th place overall finish. Over on the boys side the Marauders captured a third place overall team finish. And junior Jackson Yarbrough stole the show as he chased down defending champion Austin Montini in the final 200 meters of the race. The two were neck and neck coming down to the finish line but Montini barely snuck across the line first.

“I was definitely very close to giving up there. He had a decent lead on me and then something snapped in me and I just decided to keep pushing it," said Maclay's Jackson Yarbrough. "I lost all my energy at that last step. It hurts a little bit but I’m happy with that I did and I’m super excited for next year.”

"Jackson had a really solid race, his second time out here with those numbers," said Maclay head cross country coach Angie Milford.
