HAVANA, Fl. (WTXL) - Basketball in Gadsden County has a long standing tradition of winning, as over a dozen State Championships have been won county wide between five different high schools since the 1940's. Gadsden County High is the sole public high school serving students now, but they've got that same State Championship mindset. On Monday, the Jags announced the hire of the guy that plans to bring home more trophies.

Steve Cherry is the new head coach of the Jags. Cherry is a former assistant coach at Tallahassee Community College, and he's also coached at several different high schools across the Big Bend, and he's excited about this new adventure.

"They're very enthusiastic about sports and athletics here, and I think you have a community that deserves to support a quality program," said Cherry. "They always say Gadsden always has athletes. Now we're just trying to make basketball players and great young men on and off the court."

Coach said his goal is to meet with the guys over the next couple of weeks before kicking off conditioning in June.
