HAVANA, Fla. (WTXL) — Even with school out and sports canceled, there is still recruiting going on and there are still signings to be had.

Paul Mathews, Jr. signed with Independence Community College this week to continue his basketball career. The Gadsden County standout said it's a step he's excited to take, even if he couldn't celebrate it the way he wanted.

"Since being young, watching older people sign, it's something I always wanted to do, sign with my family around," he said of not having a big signing day moment. "It is what it is. You make the best of it and stay positive. I'm excited to go to the next level and play basketball. It's a dream come true."

Mathews said he's thinking about majoring in mechanical engineering or maybe agriculture. He added he knows Kansas is a long way from home, but he said it takes sacrifices to be great.
