TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The road to Vero Beach and the State Final Four for high school softball teams in the state of Florida began Wednesday night. Four area teams looked to inch a step closer, as Regional Quarterfinal play began for Classed 5A-9A.
The Godby Cougars hosted Rutherford in Class 5A, and took an early lead, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first en route to the 12-1 win. Godby will travel to Walton High School on Tuesday for the Semifinals.
Suwannee High School also advanced out of Quarterfinal play, as they beat Bishop Kenny 6-2 on the road. The Bulldogs will face District foe Baker County on Tuesday.
In Class 8A, Chiles hosted Atlantic Coast in Quarterfinal action. The Timberwolves led 5-3 until the top of the sixth, when the visiting Stingrays hit a bases clearing triple with two outs to take the lead. They added another run on an RBI single to seal up the 7-5 win.
Chiles district counterpart Lincoln also lost, as they fell 14-0 to Oakleaf.
