Godby Hoops Gives Back To The Community

Posted

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Godby High School boys basketball program has sent nine student athletes to college in the last two seasons. The Cougars also won a State Championship in 2015, and followed it up with an appearance in the Elite Eight this season.

This summer, the Cougars are giving back to the community, as for the last month, head coach Andy Colville and his assistants and athletes have thrown a camp for area youth.

It's something Colville has done for the last four seasons, and he's made it fun and affordable for kids ages five to 15.

"To me, basketball's the best game in the world," he said Tuesday. "It's the one game where you can just get you, a ball, and a basket and you can go practice. There's a lot of young people out here that love basketball. It's fast paced, and it's a sport they enjoy."

"It's always good to start young if you want to be a basketball player," said Godby basketball player Corbin Merritt. "I mean, some of these kids, they didn't even want to play basketball until they came to this camp. Once they came to the camp, they figured out they want to play basketball. I think it's a good idea and a good experience for them."

This is the last camp of the summer for Godby. It wraps up on Friday.
