TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - It's football for real now in the state of Florida, as preseason games are in the books and week one has arrived. For the Godby Cougars, week one means a big trip for a big date in Mobile, Alabama.
The Cougars are headed west to take on Thompson High School out of Alabama on Saturday at the 2016 Mobile Bay Gridiron Challenge. Godby, coming off a 14-0 preseason loss to Bainbridge, a game where the defense stood out, but their offense struggled to get moving.
Head coach Todd Lanter was pleased with the Godby defense and notes they were missing a few key guys last week to injury, but they're healthy and ready to go now for an exciting trip to Alabama.
"It's great for our kids to be able to go play out of state," he said Tuesday at practice. "We're traveling and spending the night. We get to play in Ladd Stadium, where they play the Senior Bowl, so it's a great experience for them. Playing a Bainbridge, who's the 11th ranked team in Georgia, traveling playing Thompson is only going to make us better for Wakulla and Rickards, absolutely."
Godby's match-up with Thompson is slated for Saturday.
