TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Former FSU women’s tennis player Amy Sargeant picked up her first-career professional tournament championship this past weekend at the U.S. Open National Playoff. The Florida regional event was hosted at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center at Florida State University.
“I’m pretty excited I got to play my first professional tournament here at FSU,” Sargeant said. “It was a good weekend. It was different playing for myself and not for the team, but I think it’s a start of a bright future.”
Sargeant won three matches en route to the title. The Birmingham, England native first defeated Krysta Lee of Gulf Breeze, Fla. 6-1, 6-2, before winning by default in the semifinals. In the final, Sargeant outlasted Brittany Lindl of Panama City, Fla. 7-5, 6-4.
As the winner of the Florida region, Sargeant will join 12 other regional winners to compete in the 2013 U.S. Open National Playoffs from Aug. 16-19 in New Haven, Conn. at Yale University. The winner of the event will advance to the U.S. Open Qualifying Tournament held Aug. 20-23 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center with a chance to earn a spot in the main draw of the 2013 U.S. Open.
“This opportunity is pretty cool and it’s what makes the U.S. Open so unique,” Sargeant said. “I’m looking forward to playing in New Haven in August.”
Sargeant also played in the mixed doubles division with FSU men’s tennis member Benjamin Lock, however the pair fell in their quarterfinals to Jesse Witten and Sarah Witten of Naples, Fla., 7-6 (8), 6-4.
The other FSU duo of Kerrie Cartwright and Joao Gauer won a pair of matches en route to the finals, but they lost also lost their match to Witten and Witten in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 10-4.
