TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - In a few short weeks, thousands of athletes across the globe will make the journey to Rio for the 2016 Olympic Games. Several current, future, and former Florida State athletes are among those making the journey, and they're all understandably excited.
Former Seminole diver Katrina Young punched her ticket to Rio last week after finished second in the ten meter platform. She's back in Tallahassee training, and said she's preparing for the games just like any other meet.
Young fought back from fourth place in qualifying to finish second and seal up her spot on Team USA, and said at this point, she feels like she can overcome anything.
"I saved my best dive for last, and I do that on purpose because I know that I can nail it and finish the meet strong," she said of her performance at the U.S. Trials. "The feeling was just excitement and disbelief almost that I was going to make the Olympic team, which has been my dream my whole life. It was a great feeling. I can't really describe it."
Young doesn't have to go far to find someone to talk to about the feeling of competing in the Olympics. Her grandmother won bronze for Canada for track in field in the 1948 Games, and added being able to share that with her is pretty special.
"She's such an amazing women, and I've always aspired to be like her," she said. "She's very strong and sure of herself. Just to follow in her footsteps and continue that in the family, it's just fun to be able to do this now and make her proud really."
The 2016 Olympic Games kick off August 5th.
