TALLAHASSEE, Fl (WTXL) – More history has been made for the Florida State Women’s Basketball team as it was announced on Monday evening that FSU is hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament as a No. 2 seed, the highest in program history.
The Seminoles (29-4) will host No. 15 seed Alabama State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN2. Also in FSU’s quadrant are No. 7 seed Florida Gulf Coast and No. 10 Oklahoma State. Those two teams will kick off the first-round action on Saturday at 11 a.m. on ESPN2.
“We want to make Tallahassee one of the best NCAA first-and-second round venues,” FSU head coach Sue Semrau said. “We’ve got some very good teams coming to the Tucker Center in Alabama State, Oklahoma State and Florida Gulf Coast. It will be important for our fans to pack the stands and give our team an edge at the most critical time of the year.”
The Seminoles and Alabama State last met in the 2010-11 season when FSU earned an 89-39 win over the Hornets (17-14), who are the champions of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. FSU leads the all-time series 3-2.
FSU is 2-0 all-time against FGCU and 1-1 against Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls (20-11) and Seminoles have some NCAA postseason history, as OSU defeated FSU 73-72 in overtime in the 2008 second round held in Des Moines, Iowa. In that same season, the Noles and FGCU also met for the first time as FSU won 93-53 on the road.
Florida State will be making its 14th NCAA postseason appearance, including its fifth time hosting the Big Dance in Tallahassee. The Seminoles are 14-13 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and have won at least one game in each of their last 11 NCAA appearances dating back to the 1991 postseason.
FSU’s previous high seed was No. 3, which came in three consecutive years from 2009-11. The ACC had eight teams selected to this year’s NCAA Tournament.
