TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Lacey Waldrop and Monica Perry combined for 13 strikeouts and the Seminole offense plated five early runs as top-seeded Florida State downed eighth-seeded Boston College, 6-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2013 ACC Softball Championship.
With the win, Florida State (40-15, 18-2) advances to Friday’s semifinals and will face the winner of North Carolina and Georgia Tech Friday at 3:30 p.m.
The Seminoles got on the board with three runs in the first inning. The first two hitters, Victoria East and Courtney Senas, both walked and came around to score, and Maddie O’Brien in the third spot singled and scored to give Florida State a 3-0 lead.
The top of the Florida State order produced again in the second inning. With one out, East reached on a hit-by-pitch followed by another walk to Senas. Two batters later, second baseman Kelly Hensley drove in both runners to push the score to 5-0 through two innings.
Boston College (14-38, 2-19) threatened in the top of the fourth. Second baseman Alana DiMaso laced a double off the top of the center field wall to lead off the inning, and Chelsea Dimon followed three batters later with a single and a stolen base to put two in scoring position. Waldrop struck out C.J. Chirichigno to strike out the side and end the Eagle threat.
After Boston College pitcher Stephanie Lord retired six of eight hitters in relief, the Seminole offense got to the Eagles pitcher in the fifth inning. Alex Kossoff dropped a single into left field to score Kirstin Austin and give Florida State a 6-0 lead.
Waldrop (21-7) threw four innings to earn the win on the mound for the Seminoles, striking out eight and allowing four hits. Perry struck out five and allowed one hit in three innings of relief to get her second save of the season.
Chelsea Dimon (10-16) allowed four earned runs and three hits in 2.0 innings and was credited with the loss for Boston College. In four innings of relief, Lord allowed one run on three hits.
