WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The freshman duo of Donovan Petrey and Jackson Leuck contributed one RBI each, but Wake Forest (22-17, 7-11) limited sixth-ranked Florida State (23-11, 10-4 ACC) to four hits over the final four innings and earned a 4-2 win at Couch Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.
Leuck (1-4) was responsible for the first FSU run of the day when he reached on a fielder’s choice in the first inning, while Petrey (1-4) collected his fourth RBI of the season on his first collegiate homerun four innings later.
The top of the order for the Seminoles, Taylor Walls and John Sansone, each finished 2-for-4 on the day. Among Walls’ two hits was his team-high 15th double of the campaign.
FSU hurler Cole Sands (3-4) rebounded from a difficult first inning to close with a pair of strikeouts in four innings. He gave way to Ed Voyles who yielded two hits while fanning two Wake Forest batters in four innings of work.
Meanwhile, the Wake Forest combination of Connor Johnstone, Chris Farish, Donnie Sellers and Will Craig allowed seven hits, two walks and two earned runs in the victory.
“Wake Forest played very well today and there’s no way I can point any fingers on our side because they did a good job,” said head coach Mike Martin. “Parker Dunshee pitched beautifully on Friday night and today they simply beat us. Every team in the ACC can do this to any team at any time, so we simply just have to get better.”
Walls led off the game with a double into the alley and quickly moved to third with a single by Sansone. Lueck brought Walls home with by reaching on a fielder’s choice, giving Florida State the early 1-0 advantage.
Wake Forest responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, capitalizing on a double to left field by Keegan Maronpot that plated Jonathan Pryor and Will Craig for the one-run Demon Deacon lead.
After a Craig homerun to open the third inning and fielder’s choice RBI in the fourth by Pryor provided the Demon Deacons a 4-1 lead, Petrey sent his first collegiate homerun over the right field wall to cut the margin to two in the top of the fifth.
FSU stranded three base runners in the final four innings as it suffered its fourth loss away from Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium this season.
The Seminoles return to action on Tuesday evening when they host Stetson in the first of two midweek games that are set for 6 p.m. The second game of the series will follow on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
