TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) - For Florida High senior Wesley Lamb, his senior year was everything he could have imagined.
"It's a little sad, but I'm ready to move on to another part in my life," he said of his high school career being over.
Wesley helped lead the Seminoles to a Regional Final appearance in soccer this season, and after picking up track his Junior year, he finished second at Districts in the 800.
"When I first started track, it was more of a conditioning thing actually, I was trying to condition for soccer," he laughed. "After a while, I really liked competing. I like that feeling when you finish and you look at the clock, and you realize, I just ran that time! It's awesome."
"This year, his goal was to make it to Regionals," said head track and field coach Tyrone McGriff. "Honestly, I believe athletically, he was gifted enough to be a State competitor, but that time frame kind of ran out on him. I can't say enough about his work ethic. It's unparalleled."
That work ethic carries over from the pitch, to the track, and to the classroom - where Wesley will graduate with a 4.4 GPA.
"I think that there's a parallel between a strong academic program, and a strong athletic program," said coach McGriff. "The kids that take a lot of pride in their academic pride, they also take a lot of pride in what they do in the field of competition. He fits that mold."
A mold that the Seminoles plan to keep for a while.
"It was fun, I'm proud of what I did, but I'm ready to move on to another part in my life," said Wesley.
"Sometimes you can tell what's in store for certain athletes and certain kids," added coach McGriff. "With him, I know he'll be successful in whatever he does."
Whatever he does, and if it lives up to his senior year, Wesley will be just fine.
