TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) - For the first time in the history of the Florida High School Athletic Association, there will be a duals format state tournament this year. That tournament is completely separate from the individual tournament that kicks off in a little over a month.
The duals format is underway now, with Lincoln, Wakulla, and Florida High representing the Big Bend. The Seminoles were District duals runners-up, and next up on their path to state? Marianna.
If they win, they'll wrestle the winner of Wakulla and South Walton, and this format makes a team state title a true team state title.
Florida High head coach Clay Allen said he is excited about the addition of the dual state meet, as every wrestler on the roster means something.
"There might be a kid who's not a state qualifier type of kid, but if he can get decision instead of a pin, that saves the team three points," he said. "The kids get an opportunity where they're not going to be a state qualifier, or those aren't their individual aspirations, they know they can be a part of a team that qualified for the state championship and that's really cool too."
