TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - On Friday, Florida A&M Athletic Director Milton Overton, Jr. released a statement confirming that the school and head men's basketball coach Byron Samuels have parted ways. The statement reads in full:

"After review and evaluation of the Florida A&M University men’s basketball program, FAMU Athletics has decided to take its program in a different direction. Restructuring our program with a continued emphasis on academic achievement and competitive success will be key components in moving FAMU basketball forward.  We would like to thank Coach Byron Samuels for his contributions to our men's basketball program and student-athletes over the past three seasons. Assistant Coach Lamont Franklin will lead our program as the interim head coach while a national search is conducted for a replacement. Our focus continues to center around “Building Champions in the classroom, on the field and in life - with academic honesty and integrity.”

– Milton Overton, FAMU Director of Athletics

Samuels was in a contract year at the University and that contract was not renewed. The head coach just wrapped up his third season with the Rattlers, and dealt with leading scorers transferring his first two years at FAMU.

Samuels was able to get the APR sanctions against the men's basketball team lifted prior to the 2016-2017 season, and the Rattlers returned to the postseason for the first time since 2014.
