TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Last season was one the Florida A&M baseball program won't forget for a long time. They won their first MEAC Championship since 1994, and they made the program's first ever Regional appearance, so this season, they have big goals.
One thing head coach Jamey Shouppe talked about repeatedly at Tuesday's media day for the program was the depth this team has. Despite returning several key players, FAMU also has several big transfers and a stellar freshman class.
There is no doubt this Rattler squad has a target on their back. Shouppe says the goal for his team is to continue to have fun, and not let the pressure get to them, and if they keep doing that, they'll be just fine.
"Luckily for us as coaches, the more fun they have, the easier the game is," he said Tuesday. "I tell the coaches all the time, remind me to be the checks and balances and my personality not getting on these kids too hard, and just understand that it's just a game."
"It's around the corner, the season is right around the corner, so everybody is hyped, a little bit more bouncing around," said outfielder Marlon Gibbs. "We practice to be champions, so we're going to come out here everyday, go through the practice like champions. You practice like champions, you play like champions."
The Rattlers open up the season at home on February the 19th when they host Marshall in the first game of a three game series. First pitch is slated for 4:00.
