BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 26) – A cold shooting first half dug too deep a hole for FAMU Women’s Basketball team to dig out of, as a they dropped a 73-53 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference road decision to Coppin State Saturday afternoon in the Coppin Center.
Saturday’s setback was the fifth in the last six games for the Rattler Women (3-15, 1-5 MEAC), and the ninth loss in their last 11 games, while Coppin State (2-17, 2-5 MEAC) picked up just their second win of the season.
FAMU never led in the game, falling behind, 15-4 after the first quarter, with cold shooting (23 percent from the floor), they had fallen farther behind by halftime at 41-12.
The Rattlers showed a bit of life in the third period, outscoring the Eagles, 17-12, which sparked them to open the fourth quarter with a 10-3 run to close to 53-39 with 7:28 lefton a three-pointer by Keziah Dilworth.
FAMU got even closer in the waning minutes of the fourth period, pulling to within 12 points at 55-43 on a Tyra James layup with 6:13 left, riding a 14-2 fourth quarter surge.
However, Coppin regained control of the game, closing out the affair with an 18-10 finishing flurry.
FAMU, which outscored the Eagles, 41-32 in the second half thanks to shooting almost 50 percent (46.5 percent) in the final two quarters, was led by Candice Williams with 17 points, followed by the trio of Dy’Manee Royal, Jasmine Ballew and Keziah Dilworth each scoring nine points. Royal and Dilworth each pulled down seven rebounds.
Chance Graham led the Eagles with a 25-point, 22-rebound double double. Brooke Fields finished with 14 points, while Maraiyah Smith added 12 points.
