TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida A&M Softball battled seven tough innings with #6 Kentucky, but lost in the late innings, 4-2 in their 2015 season opener at the Lady Rattler Softball Field.
FAMU sophomore pitcher Kenya Pereira (0-1) worked all seven innings, scattering seven hits, allowing four runs while striking out five and walking three.
Kentucky got on the board first Thursday, when Sylver Samuel tripled to center, later scoring on Griffin Joyner’s sacrifice fly to left for a 1-0 UK lead.
In the fifth, UK extended their lead to 3-1 when Breanne Ray singled to drive in Ansley Smith from second, then they made it a 4-1 count in the sixth on Nikki Sagermann’s solo home run to left center.
FAMU made it 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, on Jessie Nathan’s RBI double to center, which scored Tashayla Irvis, who reached on a throwing error.
Kentucky’s Meagan Prince (1-0) went the distance for the Wildcats, striking out 11, while scattering five hits and walking one in seven innings.
