TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Feb. 23) - The Florida A&M Women’s Basketball team picked up their 10th win of the season as the Lady Rattlers defeated Savannah State, 67-59, here Saturday afternoon at the Al Lawson Center.
FAMU jumped out to a 12-6 lead on a Kimberly Sparkman three pointer with 16:13 to go in the first.
SSU took the lead on a Blessing Uba free throw with 14:20 left in the half, giving the Lady Tigers a 13-12 lead, capping a 7-0 run by the Lady Tigers.
The Lady Rattlers would answer with a 12-5 run, taking a 24-17 lead on a Keturah Martin jumper with 10:06 to go in the game.
SSU closed the out the half with a 19-10 run as they took a 34-32 lead on an Erin Hogue layup with 1:33 to in the first.
FAMU would tie the game at 34-34 with 12 seconds left in the half on a Sparkman layup.
The Lady Rattlers finished the first half shooting 32.5 percent (13-of-40) from the field, while the Lady Tigers shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27)
In the second half, Grice would tie the game for the third time in the half on a layup with 10:42 to go.
FAMU would then take a 57-47 lead on a Grice jumper with 7:54 to go in the game, capping a 10-0 run by the Lady Rattlers.
Jasmine Norman would cut the Lady Rattlers’ lead to 63-59 with 2:01 to go in the game.
FAMU closed out the game as they scored the final four points of the half, as the Lady Rattlers pulled away for the 67-59 win.
The Lady Rattlers finished the game shooting 34.2 percent (25-of-73), whereas the Lady Tigers shot 43.4 percent (23-of-53). SSU held the rebounding advantage over FAMU, 43-40.
FAMU had a trio of Lady Rattlers to score in double figures as Grice scored a game high 24 points, followed by Patrice Collie with 15 and Sparkman with 13. Jamie Foreman led FAMU on the boards with 10; while Adreya Lacy dished a team high five assists.
SSU had a quartet to score in double figures as both Andrietta Thomas and Uba finished with 14 points each, while both Hogue and Norman finished with 12 points each. Hogue led the Lady Tigers on the boards with nine, while Jazmin Thomas dished out four assists.
The Lady Rattlers increased their record to 7-5 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play and 10-15 overall, while the Lady Tigers lowers their record to 2-10 in conference play and 7-18 overall.
FAMU will close out their 2012-2013 home season as they will host South Carolina State on senior night on Monday, Feb. 25 at the Al Lawson Center in a 5:30 p.m. start.
