Former Seminole, and Leon County product, Ernie Sims kicked off his 8th Annual Charity Weekend on Friday at Tom Brown Park with a camp for kids. More than 450 young athletes packed the park for the event, which was free for youth from ages seven to sixteen.

Sims said he looks forward to the camp every year, and still feels honored when a kid asks for his autograph. The ladies weren't left out either, as a cheer camp took place.

Sims added he's happy to throw the camp for the community, and happy to encourage kids to pursue their goals even outside of athletics.

"Football in general brings diversity together," he said Friday. "It has a powerful effect to bring people together. This football camp and this weekend is just my general expression to bring the community together."

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum was also in attendance, and added there is nothing more universal than athletics.

"You have difference abilities and different sides of town," he said. "Folks are able to come together and learn how to communicate and cooperate."

The Charity Weekend continues Saturday with a track meet.
