TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (December 9, 2017) – NJCAA No. 5/Region 8 No. 2 Tallahassee Community College defeated Region 8 No. 10 St. Petersburg 94-43 on Saturday in women's basketball action. 

With the win, Tallahassee (10-0) equaled the 1996-97 squad for the best start in school history. 

Saturday's outcome was rarely in doubt, but both teams endured a slow start. Midway through the first quarter, St. Petersburg led 6-4, and the game was tied at 8-all with 2:35 remaining. 

Japonica James basket at the 1:44 mark put Tallahassee in front for good, and the Eagles led 14-8 after the first quarter. 

Tallahassee finally got cranked up in the second quarter, outscoring the Titans 29-11. 

A basket by Ayanna Mazyck with 4:45 left in the half gave the Eagles their first double-digit lead of the game (26-16). The Titans were still within striking distance when Troi Grant hit a free throw at the 2:53 mark, trailing 32-19. 

St. Petersburg didn't score again until 1:10 remaining in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Tallahassee scored 37 unanswered points, including a 26-0 run to start the third quarter. 

A free throw by Victoria Pearce ended the run and gave the Eagles a 69-19 lead. They led 69-22 at the end of the quarter. 

Despite hitting just four of its first 12 field goal attempts, Tallahassee ended up shooting 50.7 percent (36-of-71) for the game. 

James led all scorers with 22 points. Jamyra McChristine had a double-double, 12 points and 10 rebounds. 

Jas Hill scored 15 and Nakiah Black, 14. 

Tallahassee will look for win No. 11 on Wednesday when it hosts ASA College Miami at noon. The game was added to the schedule to replace a pair of games originally scheduled in Niceville, Fla.
