TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State Football coach Mike Norvell has named James Blackman as the starting quarterback for the opening game against Georgia Tech on September 12.

The announcement was made at a press conference on Tuesday.

"[I'd] also like to announce we're going to name James Blackman our starting quarterback for this season going into the beginning of the year," said Mike Norvell, the Florida State head football coach.

A week and a half out from the Florida State football team's debut, veteran James Blackman has been named the starting quarterback for the Seminoles.

Norvell said Blackman has had an extraordinary camp and he's been pleased with the growth and development with the redshirt junior.

Norvell said there will still be competition at the quarterback position and he wouldn't be shocked if the other guys get an opportunity to play, but Blackman has done everything he needs to earn the shot at the starting gig.

"He's had good plays and he's had bad plays just like every other player through this fall camp," Norvell said. "His response is something I've been really pleased with. His understanding of what he sees on the field has been impressive to me which ties in with what he's taken from the meeting room to his own study and the application at practice and scrimmages."

The Seminoles are scheduled to face Georgia Tech on Saturday, September 12 at 3:30 p.m.
