TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Extending its ACC Tournament winning streak to 16 games, No. 5 Florida State (49-8) posted a 7-0 win over Georgia Tech (31-27) on Thursday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the 2019 ACC Softball Championship.
Redshirt senior pitcher Meghan King improved to 27-5 on the season, allowing just one hit over 6.0 innings with one walk and eight strikeouts.
“Any win right now is a big win, it doesn’t matter how it is done,” said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. “I liked the adjustments in game, and Meghan threw a great game for us. Quality double plays and big swings, just a fun game today.”
A single by Dani Morgan in the bottom of the second inning was the only hit of the game until Georgia Tech’s Kaylee Ellebracht lined a two-out double to right in the top of the fifth.
Morgan opened the bottom of the fifth inning with a single up the middle and scored on Anna Shelnutt’s ninth home run of the season to center, giving FSU a 2-0 lead.
Cassidy Davis walked later in the inning and was pinch-run for by Deja Bush. Bush stole second and moved to third on a ground out, but was left stranded.
Back-to-back walks from Sydney Sherrill and Elizabeth Mason allowed Morgan to extend the lead to 5-0 with a three-run home run to left, her third hit of the game.
Shelnutt reached on a GT fielding error and was run for by Maegan Tomlinson. Zoe Casasentered the game and crushed a two-out, pinch-hit home run to make it 7-0 Noles.
Kathryn Sandercock entered to pitch the seventh inning for the Noles and allowed a lone single to close out the win.
The Seminoles advance to the ACC semifinals and will play against the winner of No. 3-seed Notre Dame and No. 6-seed Duke on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Regional Sports Networks (RSN), and links for tickets, the broadcast and live stats will be available on the softball schedule page of Seminoles.com.
