Softball Completes Sweeps of GT with 5-4 win

ATLANTA, Ga. (SEMINOLES.COM) — The No. 14 Florida State softball team (6-1, 3-0) completed the weekend sweep of Georgia Tech (5-3, 0-3) Friday, defeating them 5-4.

Danielle Watson started for the Noles in the circle as she pitched four innings allowing four hits and four runs with four strikeouts. The win marks the third win of the season for Danielle Watson.

Caylan Arnold entered the game in the fifth inning and allowed no runs with one hit and three strikeouts in three innings, earning her first save of the season.

Offensively the Noles were led by Dani Morgan once again as she had two RBIs on two hits, including a double in the third inning.

Florida State 5, Georgia Tech 4

Georgia Tech struck first today scoring one run in the first inning. Emma Kauf led off with a single for the Yellow Jackets. Two batters later she was sent home on a Cameron Stanford double to centerfield giving GT a 1-0 lead.

Florida State quickly tied the game back up at one in the bottom of the first inning. Kiersten Landers led off with a walk. She stole second and a few pitches later advanced to third on a wild pitch. With one out Landers was sent home on a ground ball by Sydney Sherrill to the second baseman, tying the game at one.

The Seminoles grabbed their first lead of the game in the second inning coming off of two runs. Cassidy Davis led off the inning with a solo shot to left-center, giving the Noles a 2-1 lead. Dani Morgan then singled to left and stole second base. A Josie Muffley single through the left side scored Morgan giving FSU a 3-1 lead.

FSU extended their lead to 5-1 in the third inning. Devyn Flaherty led off with a walk before stealing second and then advancing to third on a passed ball. Sydney Sherrill followed that up with a walk of her own and then stole second. With two outs Dani Morgan stepped up to the plate and hit a double over the centerfielder’s head scoring two runs and earning her fifth and sixth RBIs of the weekend.

In the top of the fourth, Georgia Tech cut the Seminole lead to one coming off of a three-run home run by Crosby Huckabay. The Yellow Jackets got two runners on after an error by the Seminole defense and a bunt single.

Caylan Arnold came in to pitch for the Noles in the fifth inning and only allowed one runner on in three innings as she shut down the Georgia Tech offense, holding them at four runs as the Seminoles would win 5-4.

  • B1| Kiersten Landers led off the game for Florida State with a leadoff walk. She then stole second and advanced to third a few pitches later on a wild pitch. With one out Sydney Sherrill sent a ground ball to the second baseman resulting in the second out of the inning but the first run for FSU. (Georgia Tech 1, Florida State 1)

  • B2 | A two-out single by Josie Muffley through the left side scored Dani Morgan from second. (Georgia Tech 1, Florida State 3)
  • B3 | With two outs and runners on second and third, Dani Morgan hit a double over the centerfielder’s head, scoring two runs. (Georgia Tech 1, Florida State 5).
  • T4 | Crosby Huckabay hit a three-run home run to left-center. (Georgia Tech 4, Florida State 5)

Notes

  • Elizabeth Mason leads the Seminoles with three home runs. She needs just one more to tie her four home runs in 24 games a season ago.
  • The Noles have shown their speed on the bases this season, recording 26 stolen bases in seven games this season. Devyn Flaherty leads the Noles with seven stolen bases.

Florida State takes on No. 15 Virginia Tech tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am. The second game is scheduled to start around 1:30 pm. Both games are broadcasted on ACCNX.
