After a battle Friday night against in-state rival Florida, the No. 6 Florida State soccer team (4-2) took care of business on Sunday afternoon with a 6-0 win against Samford (2-2-2).

“We came out and had a good start to the game,” said head coach Mark Krikorian. “We had a good level of concentration throughout the whole game and scored some good goals. We played some pretty good soccer today and gave everyone a chance to play today.”

The Seminoles last scored six goals in 2015 when they defeated UNC Greensboro 6-0 on the road. Of those six goals today, five of them were scored by different Seminoles, including two by Jaelin Howell, her second and third of the season.

Florida State came out firing with a Deyna Castellanos shot under two minutes into the game. The two teams then exchanged six fouls before FSU had a corner kick in the 14th minutes.

Clara Robbins got a shot off but once again Samford’s goalkeeper, Morgan McCaslan, earned her second of five saves.

The Garnet and Gold got off three more shots before they finally landed one in the back of the net in the 22nd minute. For the second game in a row, Kristen McFarland scored, coming off assists by Clara Robbins and Yujie Zhao.

Kristina Lynch expanded the Seminole lead to two with her first goal in the 25th minute and Abbey Newton followed that up a minute later with her first goal of the season to make it 3-0.

Jaelin Howell earned her first of two goals this game in the 28th minutes coming off an assist from Castellanos, her third of the season.

Florida State came out firing in the second half as well, scoring in 50th and 51st minute of the game.

Castellanos was first scoring an unassisted goal for her third of the season. Howell scored one just over a minute later for her third of the season as well, both team highs. Castellanos assisted on both of Howell’s goals, giving her a team-high four assists.

The Seminoles held Samford without a shot for all 90 minutes as they recorded 18 shots of their own. FSU played 19 of 20 active players in today’s game, all earning double-digit minutes.

Florida State is back at the Seminole Soccer Complex on Thursday, September 12th to take on Colorado. FSU then heads on the road to take on Villanova on Sunday, September 15th.
