TALLAHASSEE, Fla.Cory Garrastazu’s RBI single in the 11th inning led Jacksonville (19-10) to a 3-2 victory over Florida State (18-10) Tuesday evening on Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. The Dolphins’ win snapped the Seminoles six-game winning streak in the series.

J.C. Flowers earned the start on the mound for FSU, the first of his career. The Seminoles regular centerfielder, Flowers pitched a career high 3.0 innings and struck out three batters without allowing a run on just one hit and a walk.

In the top of the fourth, Flowers moved to center field, Elijah Cabell moved to the left field and right-hander Tyler Ahearn came on to pitch. The Dolphins reached on an error and a single to start the frame, but a strikeout and two pop ups left both players in scoring position.

Mike Salvatore launched his fourth home run of the season in the fifth inning to score Mat Nelson and give FSU a 2-0 lead. Salvatore, FSU’s leadoff hitter, has four home runs on the season and 28 RBI, already surpassing his 2018 total of 27 in 34 fewer games.

Jonah Scolaro recorded four outs in the fifth and sixth innings, leaving with the bases loaded in the sixth. Chase Haney relieved the southpaw and let up an RBI single to Jacob Southern before setting down the next two hitters and leaving the bases loaded.

Jacksonville starter Austin Temple was pulled in the sixth inning, giving up five hits and five walks in 5.2 innings over 100 pitches. Jagger McCoy pitched 2.1 innings without allowing a hit to get the Dolphins to the ninth inning. Nick Love (2-0) threw the 9th and 10th innings without allowing a baserunner.

Antonio Velez gave up a pair of doubles to Angel Camacho and Southern in the eighth inning to tie the game at 2-2. Conor Grady (4-3) did not allow a run in his first two innings, but the Dolphins scored a run on a leadoff double and a single to right field against the right-hander in the 11th inning.

Zach Bryant earned his sixth save of the year with a perfect 11th inning. The Dolphins retired the final 10 batters and faced the minimum over the final four innings.

OF NOTE

  • Junior J.C. Flowers made his first career start pitching Tuesday (he has started 127 games in center field) and served as FSU’s designated hitter. Flowers tied a career high with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings. For the season, he has not allowed a run in 11.2 innings pitched.
  • Three other Seminoles made their first career starts at certain positions Tuesday: Elijah Cabell in CF; Tim Becker in LF; and Nander De Sedas at 2B. Mike Salvatore made his first start at shortstop this season after starting all 62 at the position last year.
  • Elijah Cabell walked and doubled Tuesday, extending his streak of reaching base to eight games. Cabell has walked 27 times and been hit by 10 pitches and leads FSU with a .468 on-base percentage.
  • Robby Martin singled in his first two at-bats and his 10 multi-hit games this season trail only Mike Salvatore’s 11.
  • Salvatore hit his fourth home run of the season and now has 28 RBI, surpassing his 2018 total of 27.

Up Next

Florida State hits the road for a three-game set at Miami April 5-7. The Seminoles have not lost the season series against the Hurricanes since 2008 and won 2-of-3 last season in Tallahassee.
